Trustee Profile

While not every Trustee will possess all the following traits, UWC Costa Rica hopes that the Board as a whole will demonstrate the following experience and skills.

  • 1 - Passion for International Education:

    A deep commitment to international education and an understanding of the unique ideological, educational, and social context in which UWC Costa Rica operates.

    A belief in the simple idea that young people living, learning, working, and serving together can lead to real tolerance and profound understanding.

    An overarching commitment to the College’s mission and program goals.
  • 2 - Active and Engaged Participation:

    A willingness to participate fully through open and candid discussions.

    The ability to respectfully challenge conventional thinking and to ask tough questions.

    Effective communication skills; a listener and collaborative colleague, willing to learn and change as the College’s environment and circumstances require.

    Comfort with voicing opinions and the ability to move beyond the potential disagreements and differences this creates.
    The patience and tenacity for a long-term commitment to educating oneself; and to the principles of non-profit governance.
  • 3 - Financial Support:

    The ability to identify, attract, and engage major donors and supporters, and to exemplify a commitment to the College’s financial security through personal example.

    A willingness to actively participate in the fundraising efforts of the College (Previous experience with non-profit fundraising is desirable, but not required

    An overarching commitment to the College’s mission and program goals
  • 4 -Strategic Perspective:

    The capacity to think broadly and strategically about the College’s role in the community and within the broader UWC movement.

    The willingness to be innovative and take measured risks.

    Familiarity with the management of complex organizations and the potential to play a leadership role within the Board or Council.
  • 5 - Non-Profit Experience:

    Familiarity with non-profit organizations and their governance through board service, staff or volunteer experience, or indirectly as a consultant or keen observer.

    Knowledge of the education sector or previous experience serving on the board of an independent school.
  • 6 - Fiscal and Legal Background:

    Familiarity and comfort with budgets, financial reports, investment decisions, and risk management.
  • 7 - Personal Traits of Integrity, good judgment, diplomacy, resilience, and stamina.

    Grace in dealing with a broad spectrum of personalities and politics, and good humor in working with Board and Council colleagues, staff, and students.
