Laurie Frank is a former public school teacher who has worked in the adventure and experiential education arenas for over 35 years. Although mostly retired she continues to identify as the owner/director of GOAL Consulting until there is a compelling reason to change it. Her passion is to facilitate human interaction by creating environments where everyone is empowered, with major focuses on community building, collaborative leadership, experiential education, and Appreciative   Inquiry. She has had the privilege of authoring and co-authoring five books, including the most recent: Journey Toward the Caring Classroom, 2nd edition.

Laurie has been fortunate to be able to combine her passions for social justice, education, and community building with her life’s work. It brought her to UWC, where she values the mission and the vibrant and diverse sense of community. Every visit deepens her sense of hope and optimism. Laurie lives in Madison, Wisconsin with her husband, Bert Zipperer, a retired school counselor. He is a former cheesemaker, and also the unofficial “Mayor” of the city. They are still determining their direction in retirement, but know that UWC Costa Rica will continue to play a role for them both.
