Community living is central to the UWC movement - learning to live with peers from around the world with different backgrounds and points of view is a unique way to gain insight into other cultures and perspectives. The Residential Life program at UWC Costa Rica uses an experiential learning approach to empower students as agents of change. Students learn and live together, creating a community built on diversity.

Life on UWC Costa Rica's campus is safe, exciting, and diverse.

UWC Costa Rica is located in the Santa Ana Valley, less than half an hour away from San Jose, Costa Rica's capital city. Our campus is surrounded by scenic mountains and a plethora of flora and fauna that make up the perfect setting for a campus life that is safe, exciting, and diverse.

Life on UWC Costa Rica's campus is a collaborative triad between the socially empowering Residential Life Program, our rigorous Academic Program, and a hands-on Co-Curricular Program.

Each part of our three-part program is designed with six competencies at the core. Students learn to put the competencies into action by applying knowledge gained in the classroom, co-curricular program activities, and living as part of a diverse campus to become young leaders.

Host Families

All host families are evaluated and guided by the UWC Costa Rica staff to ensure a safe environment for our students. Of all their experiences acquired, students overwhelmingly praise the memories, the moments of learning firsthand about sustainable development, and the irreplaceable real-life lessons learned in the Host Family Program.

Mentorship Program

The mentorship program at UWC Costa Rica ensures that each student is part of a smaller group of peers overseen by an adult mentor on campus. The mentors get to know each of their groups well, learning together during the Coffee and sweet times along with the Wellness and Residential team, as well as taking them on outings and organizing bonding events such as dinners, games, or ice-cream trips, and having meaning one on one follow ups to support them

Residential Life Team

There are 8 day Residence Coordinators and 2 Night coordinators who support the students in their daily life at UWC Costa Rica, along with 7 other residential staff. The team is integrated by a wide variety of professionals who support the students to live with balance and attention to their wellbeing, both physical and mental. The team is integrated by licensed pychologists, nurses, paramedics, physical trainers, educators and a doctor, among others, so our students are supported in an integral manner that ensure they are both safe and informed about how to lead healthy, balanced lifestyles. Wellness activities are regularly organized, such as outings, camps, excursions, movie nights, dinners, meditations, and exercise activities, to make sure that students feel supported and guided in their academic and social journey with us.
