Life at UWC Costa Rica is Safe, Exciting, and Diverse.

Community living is central to the UWC movement - learning to live with peers from around the world with different backgrounds and points of view is a unique way to gain insight into other cultures and perspectives. The Residential Life program at UWC Costa Rica uses an experiential learning approach to empower students as agents of change. Students learn and live together, creating a community built on diversity.

Eight Day Residence Coordinators and two Night Coordinators support the students' daily lives at UWC Costa Rica, along with seven other residential staff. The team is integrated by various professionals who support the students in living with balance and paying attention to their physical and mental well-being. The team is integrated by licensed psychologists, nurses, paramedics, physical trainers, educators, and a doctor, among others, so our students are supported in an integral manner that ensures they are both safe and informed about how to lead healthy, balanced lifestyles. Wellness activities, such as outings, camps, excursions, movie nights, dinners, meditations, and exercise activities, are regularly organized to ensure students feel supported and guided in their academic and social journey with us.

Student Wellbeing

UWC Costa Rica offers constant support and training to students, faculty, and staff members on emotional well-being, self-care, and healthy habits as a life competence. Life at UWC Costa Rica goes beyond the classrooms; we learn from each other for a lifetime. Building a strong, safe net and giving the community all the resources for their personal and shared journeys at our College is one of our priorities as an institution.

List of 3 items.

  • Host Families

It allows participating students and families to enrich themselves through cultural exchange. The host family also becomes a key part of the emotional support network that students can have during their two years of stay in our country.
  • Medical Assistance

Offers support 24/7 to students through nurses, paramedics, appointments with a doctor, and a private service (Emergencias Médicas) for over-the-phone medical consultation or ambulance service when needed.
  • Mentoring & Support

We aim to provide students with a healthy network of at least five adults (teacher and other staff) from whom students can rely or seek support. Combining theories and topics in everyday practice.

The Wellness Team on campus is also supported by external professionals who support the students and staff. Night coordinators are available to support students and supervise the respect of silence time and other community needs.

Residences

Students live in one of the eight residences on campus, each named after one of the most iconic beaches of Costa Rica. Residences are divided by gender, with two recently introduced non-binary/mixed residences.

Every residence has its residence coordinator, a responsible adult living on campus who provides direct assistance and support for the students. Residence meetings, a series of topics, activities, and conversations within a healthy network of adults they can rely on or seek support from when needed, are also routinely held for the community.

The Residence Assistants (RA's) project is a peer support program where two students are chosen by their peers per residence. These students receive mental health first aid training and meet every other week with a Wellness Counselor to follow up on concerns, keep training updated, share feedback about the College’s Wellness strategies, and support each other.
