UWC Costa Rica’s Class of 2025 Graduation

UWC Costa Rica
On May 22, 2025, UWC Costa Rica proudly celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2025—a generation of bold dreamers, passionate changemakers, and now, lifelong members of the global UWC alum network.
Held at the beautiful CIC Ande in Belén, Heredia, the ceremony brought together over 600 guests, including families, staff, board members, special guests, and a particularly meaningful group: a large representation of Class of 2024 alums who returned to celebrate with their friends and community.

The venue itself was a vibrant tapestry of light and color, adorned with traditional garments from around the world—a reflection of the diversity, unity, and cultural pride that define our UWC Costa Rica family.
From the beginning of the celebration, when Head of College Mauricio Viales invited the audience to rise and welcome the graduating alums, the atmosphere was filled with joy, reflection, and an immense sense of pride. In his speech, Mauricio reminded us of our mission:

“To cultivate in young people the passion and ability to serve humanity and our planet—learning from nature and from each other for a lifetime.”

This mission came alive on stage as alums, staff, and students came together to celebrate a generation that had lived this purpose with authenticity and determination.

Mauricio also took a moment to honor those who have shaped this community behind the scenes—leaving staff members whose years of service total over 50, beloved figures Brenda, Angie, Natalie, Juan Carlos, Sindy, Mariano, and Barry. Their dedication has helped create the supportive and transformative environment our graduates have called home for the past two years.

A highlight of the celebration was the presentation of the Educator Awards, chosen by the graduating class to honor teachers who had left a lasting impact on their journeys. This year’s recipients, Erick Loria and Emiel Stegeman, not only received the award but also served as the ceremony's MCs. They brought their signature energy and warmth to the stage, introducing vibrant dance performances and honoring students with the Outstanding Leadership Awards (OLAs).

From academics to co-curriculars, residential life, wellness, and—new this year—sustainability, these OLA recipients embodied the UWC values of empathy, accountability, and service. Their contributions serve as reminders that leadership takes many forms, and often begins with a simple commitment to care for others and the world around them.

Then came the moment everyone had been waiting for—the certificate ceremony. One by one, each alum was called to the stage to receive their diploma, closing this chapter of their UWC journey while stepping into the next.

As the evening progressed, the celebration became more personal and emotional. Two alums, Iona Hamlin and Anastassia Kaneli, surprised their classmates with a heartfelt original song, followed by a community rendition of Rivers and Roads. As the final chorus echoed through the hall, the entire graduating class stood together on stage—one last time, one last song.

And in true Costa Rican fashion, the celebration concluded with a traditional cimarrona, filling the venue with music, dancing, and pure alegría—a joyful send-off worthy of the legacy this generation leaves behind.
As our new alums prepare to spread out across the globe, we know their journey of learning is far from over.

At UWC Costa Rica, we believe learning doesn't end with graduation. It continues for a lifetime, as they carry the mission forward as agents of positive change. Whether advocating for climate justice, promoting peace, building communities, or nurturing the people around them, they will continue to learn from nature and from each other.

We are endlessly proud of you, Class of 2025. You have inspired us with your courage, your compassion, and your commitment to the values we hold dear. Wherever your next chapter takes you, know that UWC Costa Rica is cheering you on—always.

Felicitaciones, Class of 2025. You are now and forever, UWC Costa Rica alums.
